The legalization of cannabis in Delaware has opened a variety of opportunities in the cannabis industry. While this may be true, landing a job will take some research, dedication, and perseverance. 

For instance, you’ll need to understand the legal landscape and the requirements needed to enter this growing field. 

Overview of the Legal Status of Cannabis in Delaware 

Cannabis has been legal for medicinal purposes in Delaware since 2011, however its first medical dispensary didn’t open until June 2015. 

On April 23, 2023 Delaware became the 22nd state to legalize adult-use cannabis. HB1 and HB2 were passed without the signature of the Governor, Gov. John Carney, who said in his statement that he continues to believe that legalizing weed is “not a step forward.” 

HB 1 legalizes possession of up to one ounce of cannabis for adults 21 and older.

HB 2 will regulate and tax cannabis sales for adults in Delaware.

Growing Industry Opportunities in Cannabis Dispensaries 

There are currently around twelve medical dispensaries operating in Delaware. As of 2022, these stores have brought in over $228 million in sales and over $20 million in tax revenue. Even with the industry operating on such a small scale, there have been a variety of jobs created from cultivation to retail.

The opportunities for cannabis jobs will continue to increase once the application window for business licenses opens up later in 2024.

Requirements to Work in Cannabis in Delaware 

The State of Delaware is still working on building out their recreational cannabis industry, so definitive regulations have not been published. Recreational dispensaries in Delaware are expected to open in 2025.

Educational Qualifications and Certifications 

Age and Legal Requirements 

To work in a dispensary in Delaware individuals must be 21 years of age or older.

Individuals must also not have been convicted of an excluded felony offense, and not have been convicted of a drug misdemeanor within five years.

“Excluded felony offense” means: 

    • A violent crime defined in § 4201(c) of Title 11 that was classified as a felony in the jurisdiction where the person was convicted; or 
    • A violation of a state or federal controlled substance law that was classified as a felony in the jurisdiction where the person was convicted, not including:
    • An offense for which the sentence, including any term of probation, incarceration, or supervised release, was completed 10 or more years earlier; or
    • An offense that consisted of conduct for which Delaware’s new laws would likely have prevented a conviction, but the conduct either occurred prior to July 1, 2011, or was prosecuted by an authority other than the State of Delaware.

Aside from customer service, you’ll also need a solid understanding of different cannabis strains, products, and their effects. Employees should be able to educate patients on various products, their onset times, and their potential benefits. 

Ability to Work in a Regulated Environment 

Cannabis companies operate within strict regulatory frameworks, requiring employees to adhere to all state laws and regulations governing the cultivation, manufacturing, sale, and distribution of medical marijuana.

Research Available Job Opportunities 

Online job portals like Indeed or LinkedIn and Industry-Specific websites like Vangst.com often list job openings in dispensaries. You can also try working with an industry-specific recruiting company like FlowerHire to get the ball rolling. 

Building your network within the industry can help you get a leg up with new opportunities. Attending industry events, joining professional associations, and networking with individuals already in the cannabis industry can help provide valuable insights and job leads.
